Cradle of Mankind
Since 1999, the Cradle of Mankind
has been listed as one of UNESCO's 3 World Heritage Sites in South
Africa. The Cradle is a 3000 hectare game reserve which also contains
the Sterkfontein and Swartkrans caves, the site at which fossils from
the dawn of the human species have been found - hence the name 'Cradle
of Mankind'. Previous discoveries such as 'Mr Ples' and 'Little Foot'
have provided scientists with important evidence in the study of human
evolution. The caves remain a constant treasure trove for paleontologists.
