Busanga
Plain, Zambia
The Busanga Plain is a vast floodplain
aquified by the Lufupa river system. The terrain consists of savannah
dotted with the occasional termite mound, fig, and palm trees. The
Busanga Plain boasts one of the richest wildlife habitats in Zambia.
Hippos, wildebeest, roan antelope, hartebeest, tsessebe, buffalo,
zebra, reedbuck, oribi, puku, impala, red lechwe (unique to Zambia)
and the rare sitatunga antelope can be found in great numbers. The
large concentration of prey also makes this area an ideal hunting
ground for predators such as the cheetah, lion and wild dog.
The flood plain is a typical
delta environment for five months of the year. As such it supports
large numbers of water birds, including black egret, squacco heron
and open-billed storks during this time. Year-round wattled and
crowned cranes and raptors (including the lanner falcon) inhabit
the plain.
