Lusaka, Zambia
Lusaka is the capital of Zambia,
and as such, the country’s administrative, financial, and commercial
centre. The city is situated at the junction of the Great North Road
(to Tanzania) and the Great East Road (to Malawi). The Great Uhuru
(Tanzam or Tazara) Railway connects Lusaka to Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
Lusaka was founded by Europeans in 1905 and was named after the headman
of a nearby African village. In 1935 it replaced Livingstone as the
capital of the British colony of Northern Rhodesia, and in 1976 it
became a province. It now has a population of 2 million and is one
of the fastest-growing cities in central Africa.
Lusaka has a superb climate. Winters are mild and sunny with temperatures
ranging from 10 to 26 degrees. Summers are warm and equally sunny,
with temperatures ranging from 20 to 32 degrees, and frequent thunderstorms
to break up the heat. The average rainfall between November and April
is about 950mm, and humidity is usually below 40%.
