Mosi-Oa-Tunya Park
Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home
to the spectacular Victoria Falls. The park is situated on the southern
most edge of Zambia on the Zimbabwe border. The physical landmark
which separates these two countries is the Victoria Falls, known to
the locals as “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, Smoke Which Thunders. Mosi-ao-Tunya
National Park is divided into two sections; a game park along the
riverbank and the Victoria Falls themselves.
The park is a wildlife sanctuary and home to Zambia’s only remaining
rhino and more common species including elephant, giraffe, zebra,
sable, eland, buffalo and impala. Baboons are frequently seen on the
paths leading to the falls and small antelopes and warthogs inhabit
the rainforests on the edge of the falls.
Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park also contains the Old Drift Cemetery where
the first European settlers were buried. The community first camped
along the banks of the Zambezi, until the town of Livingstone was
founded.
