Roan - Hippotragus equinus
Like sable, roan are dependend on water
and are more frequently seen during the winter months when they
are concentrated near the permanent water-holes. Once the rains
arrive they disperse. Roan may be distinguished by their fawn colouring,
black and white facial markings, large ears and high shoulders.
They have shorter horns than sable.
Best viewing is on the road between
Kasane and Pandamatenga, Santawani south of Moremi
and Chobe.
Endangered species in Botswana, numbers are not known but diminishing
through paching. One of Botswana's conserved animals.
